We were proud to nominate our home base, Bend, Oregon, for the 2025 Strongest Town Contest. While we ultimately came up short in the final four (congrats to Marion, the well-deserving winner), the process sparked something even more meaningful: a citywide conversation about what it truly means to be a “strong town.”

As a city facing unprecedented growth – up from just 35,000 residents in 1999 to over 104,000 today – Bend has become a case study in how small cities can adapt responsibly and creatively. According to Strong Towns, our population is projected to grow another 54% by 2045. The big question: how do we build for that future without losing what makes Bend, Bend?
At Hiatus Homes, we believe part of the answer lies in housing diversity. Cottage housing and small-scale, intentional development are key tools cities can use to meet housing demand while preserving character and livability. Being part of this national conversation validated the work we’re doing and reminded us that strong towns aren’t born, they’re built – thoughtfully and collectively.
